Ugly extensions and ostentatious PVC conservatories may soon become little more than a distant memory, with the recent launch of Heritage Buildings in Ireland. The company specialises in the design, manufacture and assembly of period-style, oak-framed buildings, which can be used as garden rooms, extensions or mews-style cottages/offices. Designed in the style of local historic architecture, these extensions are very tasteful and blend in with older buildings.

Since the UK Company launched their business in Dublin last month, they have been inundated with queries, according to director Peter Vallely, who claims that Irish homeowners have become very discerning about the type of extension they want, these days.

"It's amazing the number of people who want extra space, but who don't want the expense of moving to a larger home and paying stamp duty. We find that most of our requests are for garden rooms, which have taken over a bit from conservatories, particularly in south-facing gardens. The other thing that people are looking for are two-storey buildings that have living accommodation overhead and a garage space underneath", says Vallely.

One of the attractive features of these timber-framed extensions/garden rooms is that they only take between 10 and 12 days to complete.
